The band program at Lafayette Jefferson High School allows students to participate in a variety of performing ensembles suited to their abilities and desires. A basic assumption for all bands is the willingness to improve and be part of a group effort. Students who have successfully completed the middle school band program are welcomed and encouraged to continue their musical studies at Lafayette Jefferson. For those students wishing to participate in the competitive marching arena, the Jefferson Marching Band is offered as a class during the school day. The group works extensively during the summer and fall participating in contests, and provides entertainment during the Jeff football games.

After the marching season is over, the students then become a concert band for the remainder of the first semester. In addition to marching band, also offered during the first semester are: Freshman Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and the Wind Ensemble.

At the end of the marching band season, the Drum Line becomes the Percussion Ensemble, a legitimate performing group. All of these bands strive for individual and ensemble improvement. Outstanding professionals, who have encouraged and guided these students since their beginning days in middle school, give students sectional help. It is very important that recognition be given to these teachers, and the outstanding work that the middle school directors do to prepare our students for the high school experience.

Other activities that students are encouraged to be part of include the popular Jefferson Show Band, which plays for the Jefferson basketball games; Solo and Ensemble contest; Indiana All-State Band; private lessons; and numerous small group playing experiences. Wind players also have the opportunity to audition for membership in the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra.

The Jefferson Band program is also supported by the parents and friends making up the Jefferson Band Boosters. The group is an integral part in the success of all of the bands at Jeff.

The Music Department presents two major annual performance events. In the late fall is the formal Gala, which includes a very popular silent auction. In the spring, Music in May showcases the talents of all the musical preformance ensembles, bands and orchestra.
